Racism and The Hunger Games…

emelectrified:

I virtually never write text posts (at least not ones of more than a few words) on Tumblr.  But something I discovered recently stirred sufficient emotion within me to motivate a good old vent.  I recently got into The Hunger Games (yeah I know, a little late, but I still read the book before watching the film!) and thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the film (currently near the end of the second book, eagerly anticipating the arrival through my letterbox of the third).

Unbeknownst to me, before the movie had even been released, a furore had occurred online over the supposed ‘mis-casting’ of some characters.  Out of curiousity (and some confusion), I decided to do a little online research as to exactly what the controversy was about.  I was taken aback by what I found.  Most of the relevant information, lots of it from Twitter initially, has been compiled into one handy blog on Tumblr, called ‘Hunger Games Tweets’ which makes for very interesting (albeit disheartening and often enraging) reading.

After reading the entire blog and many articles that it linked to, I felt compelled to write to the blog owner in support.  This is my message…

My Sabbath Solace - KEEP LIVING!

I don’t know about you, but it seems like I can barely catch my breath before something else changes my world.  Very little comes easily, and sometimes it’s hard to tell if we’re winning or losing or even making progress.

I was grateful to be reminded this morning as I listened to Ricky Dillard’s song that sometimes holding on IS winning. It made me consider a few verses in Romans 8

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

There’s always something to look forward to.  As long as you’re breathing, there’s victory ahead.  Just hold on. God’s love waits for YOU on the other side. You WILL overcome. Just… keep living.

Keep Living

Ricky Dillard

I realize sometimes you wanna give up the fight

And I sense sometimes you wanna lay down & die

But as long as you still have life and breath

You still have something to do for the Savior

Keep living through this, cause after this is the victory

Keep living God said in His word keep living

I know that some friends have left have you high and dry

And meeting challenges have left you petrified

But as long as you still have life and breath

You still have something to do for the Savior

Keep living through this, cause after this is the victory

Keep living, God said it – Keep living

Keep living Through your troubles

Oh, keep living Through your pain

Keep living Through your worries

Yes, keep living God will sustain you

Keep living through this, cause after this is the victory

Keep living, God said it – Keep living

As long as you’re breathing

Keep Living

Keep living through this, cause after this is the victory

Keep living, God said it

Keep living!

Just found this. I jumped up & down & screamed like a crazy person.

It was a receipt I thought I’d lost & was really upset about because that messes with my psyche AND my expenses for work.

In the middle of my -“I just found this thing party”, I remembered the parable Jesus told in Luke 15:3-7 about the shepherd rejoicing over finding a lost sheep & Heaven rejoicing over the person who repents.

I’ve never lost a sheep. I’d bet that most of you haven’t either. But I have lost a receipt. And I’m amazed that God would be THAT excited that I chose HIM. That God would be out there, looking for me and I could say “I’m not sure I’ve done it all right. And I know there are things that I’ve done wrong. But I choose YOU God. Please forgive me & help me to be what You want me to be.” And then Heaven would start partying.

Know what else is awesome? He’s that excited for you to choose Him too. Running around the house screaming like a crazy person excited. About us! Seriously.

God Bless.

Soarin’

So I fly just about weekly right now. And while I’ve gotten used to the point of considering this normal commuting… I’m amazed to realize I still ADORE flying.  I’m just as giddy about the friendly skies as I was when I as a kid.  And I’m NOT a kid anymore.

I get a bit happy when I feel the engines power up. Since I went to an engineering HS (yeah, explains some of my geek tendencies) I completely understand what happens to get us into the air - yet I’m still slightly amazed/thrilled when it happens and we “take flight”.

I love watching the clouds, or seeing some new part of the globe and marveling at how different the world can look from thousands of feet above.  Did you know there are miles & miles of PURPLE mountains in Spain? I didn’t until I flew to Madrid several years ago. I also love seeing how land division changes as we move from the East Coast of the US to the Midwest. It’s all patchy & then it becomes nice & evenly divided. It’s always makes me think about the land runs of the 1800’s (disclaimer: I’m also a history nerd).

Anywho… I’m blogging, from thousands of feet above you. It’s going to post to Facebook & Twitter in moments. And again - I’m doing this from a metal can that is moving at hundreds of miles per hour in the AIR! I don’t care how miserable you are - you have to admit this is pretty awesome.

Safe travels to you all…

Soapbox moment: I think we can all do a better job enabling young people to take the lead in youth ministries. Videos like this prove my point. Not the same tired things we did that our parents did too… but something new & fresh & relevant.

Great presentation of the 1st Quarter 2011 Lesson Study themes by Collingwood Park’s Collegiate Class.
